Thank you for coming out to support the 2007 Summer Solstice events with Indigo and Jonathan Brummet. They were some amazing workshops. The styling workshop gave us all insight into what rhythms are used in egyptian music, and some stuff you can do with them when dancing. Then, by the end of the zill choreography workshop with Indigo, we were all falling over. What a challenge! My feet were killing me! Thank the gods for hot tubs ;) I wasn't able to attend the drum workshop but I heard the students gained a lot of insight into playing the middle eastern drum.
The hafla was beautiful, great food, amazing performers, and the studio is really nice. Wood floors, red spotlights for performing, and the owner of Core Movement is really sweet, and puts on some great classes there.
Our vendors were Julianna's Wardrobe, Maria, and myself. I'll be commissioning Juliana to make me one of those fishtails skirts. Wow! She can make you stuff! Woohoo. Thanks ladies for bringing your beautiful wares to sell.
The one thing I missed with all the stuff I was doing was taking pictures, and videos. If anyone caught any pictures, or video, I would appreciate a copy. Shoot me an email offlist, and let me know.
Here are some highlights from the show:
Ayla - What a cutie. We though Kirsten Dunst learned to belly dance at first ;) Her sultry floorwork was unique and beautiful. Her sprit was bright like the sun, and she made her own amazing costume. Later Ayla performed with her student. The costuming was matching blue, and beautiful. Her student (I'm sorry I didn't get your name love) was all made up complete with sparkleys. The choreography was sweet, and the dancing was very nice! Great job ladies!
Amar Goddess Bellydance Co (Maria, myself, Joanne, Jennifer, and Odessa) - every time we turned to the mirror we couldn't help but grin. Core is our home studio, so it was really fun to dance there for an audience, and seeing ourselves do the dances in costume. Maria choregraphed both the numbers, and the more we do them, the more I love them. My troupe members are like my sisters. We have no egos, we all have input into everything. I love how these ladies work, and am honored to be a part of the group.
Rose - This is Rafi'ah's student and I hear she is moving away **sniff, sniff**. This girl has some moves. She did a sassy dance to a Hakim pop song. I think she's headed for a nice future in belly dance.
Christine Moore - She is one of the sweetest people I've met, and her dancing is unique and beautiful. She wowed us with her sword, and then did a sultry piece to some really great music (ok, you need to clue me in on that one!). Beautiful, sensual, and sweet dancer, with the presence of a goddess.
Rafi'ah's dancers - A very cute veil dance to Natacha Atlas, arabic pop singer. This may have been one of the last times we get to see that dance because of Rose moving away. How sad :( That really was a super cute choreography! Very polished, and they looked so comfortable doing it. If I didn't know it was a student troupe, I would swear these guys have been dancing together for years.
Carmella - Lovely soulful dance to Loreena McKinnit. She made me remember we were celebrating the solstice. Later, Carmella danced with Rebekkah, her 6 year old daughter. Rebekkah choreographed the duet to Tiky Tiky Boom. Very sweet performance. I can't wait to see where this duet is in 5 years :)
Maria - She wowed us with her black sim moda costume, dripping with crystals and fringe just in the right places. Her performance was hot, and her technique was incredible. She danced to more traditional music, and performed it like a modern eqyptian diva.
Jennifer Stempien - Jennifer is one of my troupe mates. She performed a sweet dance in a cute turkish blue costume. This girl really has some moves. She wowed us with her smile, and her hips move like they have a mind of their own. Wow! Jennifer is still involved in the VTech troupe, Hill and Veil.
Rafi'ah - Rafi'ah is the embodiment of sensuality. Her fluid veilwork captivates everyone, her arms move like snakes, and her presence makes her look 6 feet tall. And she's one of the cutest dancers I've ever seen :) Beautiful. If you can make it to Rafi'ahs retreat in September, go...it's a weekend of fun filled dance, and bonding with your fellow females. I went to the 2nd one and it was way too much fun!
Aphrodite - One word...WOW. Aphrodite came out with a big sword. I thought she was ready to behead someone! Her performance was gymnastic, to say the least. I couldn't get over the backbend with sword on belly, and belly flutters. Oh my gawd! What an amazing show.
Shahravar - Snaky, beautiful, theatrical. Her music was beautiful (what WAS that music?), her presence was sweet, earthy and feminine and at the same time strong and powerful. It was a slower piece, and every move was deliberate yet very natural. Lovely!
Indigo - our featured instructor and performer. She closed the 1st half with a cute khaleegy piece. This girl wears pink like a queen. Then she did an amazing, energetic egyptian set, with a drum solo that made me tired just watching. I don't think I've ever seen more energy come from one person. She knew where to pause, where to be subtle and where to go crazy with those hips. And still the queen of the shimmy if you ask me! WOW! And what a drum solo. Her costume was the most unique I have every seen. It was an assymetrical design, that just looked like fire embodied. If you stayed for this performance, I know you'll be first to register when she teaches again :) Whew, hot lady!
During the break and at the end of the show, dj bios+a+ic got us up dancing with some hot arab and eastern inspired beats, with Jonathan Brummet playing live tablas. Very cool stuff!
Thanks again for coming out. Stay tuned for future events. Don't forget Delilah and Erik Brown, September 8!
A very big thanks to Jill and the Core Movement Studio
